As early as 1637 in British Colonial America, societies were formed for those who had served in the military and/or fought in a certain war. Eventually, these groups splintered into new groups that allowed family and descendants of those who served in the military. Human nature being what it is, these groups would splinter into new groups if they wanted a more exclusive membership. Applicants who were rejected by these groups would often form their own new groups. The Hereditary Society Community at https://www.hereditary.us/ has an exhaustive list of hereditary societies demonstrating that there is something for everyone.

While I have been a member of many societies in the past, today it is just as satisfying for me to know that I could join a group without having to go through the application process and expense.

My daughter’s and son-in-law’s ancestors, past and present, have served in the military and fought in many wars. To honor their service, I am adding their military rank before their names.
