Powell in South Carolina

When John H. Powell arrived in South Carolina is not known. Based on deed and land plat information, there seems to be some relationship between John and Nathaniel Powell.

In the 1790 U.S. Edgefield, SC, Census, John is age 16 and over with 3 females in his house. In that same census, there are other Powells named Moses, Lewis and Nathaniel. The last three had been in this region way before the Revolution. No documents have been found showing how John got the land, but in 1806, he and wife Esther sell the land to George Long.

John is often mistakenly thought to have served in the Revolutionary War. The militia list that includes John H. Powell in the company of Capt. Z.S. Brooks was the post-war county militia, mustered in the 1790s. (Research by Harriet Imrey at WikiTree.com for Powell-3976)

At this WikiTree page, one of the sources mentioned is “1783 Indenture Certificate, Charleston, SC”, but there’s no mention of this in the write-up. Indentures were legal agreements between a child’s parent and the child’s new master entered into for a specified length of time. Since it is in Charleston, had the parent and child just gotten off a boat? Was John named in this? Further research needed.
